Lady Bears Heartbroken on last-second shot

ROCK HILL, SC  - The Clinton College women's basketball team had their hearts broken at home Saturday afternoon as they fell 72-69 to Carolina University on a last-second shot.

The Lady Bears played a terrific game against a quality opponent winning three of the four quarters including the second half by a score of 42-35, but their rally ultimately came up short in the end.

Clinton got out to a strong 18-8 lead midway through the first quarter but Carolina rallied back ending the quarter on an 8-0 run before outscoring the Bears 21-9 in the second quarter to take a 37-27 lead at the break.

Clinton then came out fast in the third quarter going on a 16-3 run to take a 43-42 lead, but CU would again end the quarter on a 10-1 run to lead 52-44 heading to the fourth. In the final quarter, CU again pushed their lead to 8 to lead 61-53 with 4 minutes to play before Clinton went on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 65 with 1:20 to play.

Then after a Kalen Davis layup tied the game at 69 with 17 seconds to go, CU would break the Bears' hearts as they got the offensive rebound off a missed 3 to put it back in for the and-1 layup and take the win.

Clinton was led by double-doubles from Jasmine Jenkins and Maiya Petit. Jenkins scored a team-best 17 points and 12 rebounds with 3 steals, 2 assists and a block while Petit grabbed 11 rebounds with 13 points. Clinton put all five starters in double-figures as well as guard Jamila Jenkins added 15 points and 5 boards with 2 assists while Jakyiiah Willis scored 12 with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Davis put up 10 points with 5 assists, 4 steals and 6 rebounds as well. 

Clinton shot 36 percent overall and 37 percent from three and held Carolina to only one three-pointer the entire game. The Bears are now 2-13 on the season while Carolina goes to 7-5.

Clinton will now go on the road Tuesday to face Div. II foe North Greenville at 5 PM.
