Lady Golden Bears Split Games over MLK Weekend

GREENVILLE - DENMARK, SC - The Clinton College women's basketball team split their two road games over MLK Weekend falling 59-48 to Paine College in Greenville on Saturday in the MLK Classic. The Lady Bears then rallied back and edged Voorhees College 55-52 on the road Monday evening on MLK Day.

In a low-scoring affair with fellow NCCAA foe Paine College (2-9) on Saturday, the Lady Bears got out to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter before Paine led the second frame 12-6 to take a 19-17 lead at halftime. A more competitive third quarter saw Paine take it 19-17 and lead 38-34 heading into the fourth. Finally, in the final quarter, Clinton could get no closer than four points as PC would extend their lead to as much as 14 and go on for the 11-point win.

Clinton was led by 14 points from guard Maiya Petit along with 2 assists and 2 steals while guard Jakyiiah Willis added 10 points with 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Center Amira Roy also added 5 points, 9 rebounds and a block.

Denmark, SC - The Clinton Ladies then knocked off Voorhees on Monday afternoon by three to pick up their second win of the season. Clinton got off to a strong start in this one winning the opening quarter 18-10 with three treys before shooting 47 percent in the 2nd quarter to outscore the Tigers 18-12 and take a 36-22 halftime lead.

The third quarter was then very low-scoring with the two schools combining for only 15 points as The Bears would lead 42-31 going into the fourth. Clinton would then build a 14-point lead at 45-31 early in the fourth before Voorhees would go on a 12-1 run to climb within 3 points at 46-43 with 6 minutes to play.

Clinton would then extend their lead back up to nine points at 52-43 with 4 and half minutes to go. However, the Tigers would go on another 9-2 run to get within two points with under a minute left before the Golden Bears held them off for the win.

Clinton was led by four ladies in doulbe-figures while shooting 33 percent fro the game, but scored only 19 second half points as they played mainly just a 6-man rotation. Willis led Clinton with 16 points off the bench along with 5 rebunds and 6 steals. Guard Kaelin Davis then scored 14 points with 4 steals while fellow guard Petit registered 10 points with 5 rebounds. Roy also contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Lady Bears, now 2-11, will next return to action on Thursday when they head to Florence to face Div. II Francis Marion at 6 PM.
